Why Britdex exists

Britain still makes brilliant things. They're just harder to find.

Britdex puts British-made options in front of you when you're about to buy, so buying local becomes an option more often.

We're not here to tell you what to buy.

Most of what we buy is made all over the world, and that's fine. Making things globally gives us choice, good value and plenty of good things.

But Britain still makes brilliant things too: boots in Northamptonshire, coats in Manchester, knitwear in Leicestershire. The trouble is finding them. A British name doesn't always mean it's made here, and the honest answer is often buried in a product page, a forum thread or a factory's About page.

Britdex won't fix that on its own. What we can do is make sure that when you're about to buy something, the British-made option is in front of you too, with a clear account of where it's made. Then the choice is yours.

How we do it

  • Products, not badges

A British name isn't enough. We list the specific products and ranges made here, even when the rest of the brand is made elsewhere.

  • Shown, not just claimed

Every brand page shows where things are made and how we know, with links to the sources we checked.

  • Then off you go

We're a way in, not a shop. You buy straight from the brand.

  • No paid places

Brands can help us get things right. They can't pay to be listed or to appear higher up.

Missing doesn't mean we've ruled it out.

We're starting small and adding makers category by category. If a brand isn't here yet, we probably haven't got to it. Each brand page has a "Something to add?" link if you spot something we've missed or got wrong.
