Private White V.C.

Private White V.C. is named after Jack White of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. On 7 March 1917, under fire in Mesopotamia, he tied telephone wire round himself and swam the river, towing wounded comrades to safety, and received the Victoria Cross for it. After the war he trained as a pattern cutter at a Manchester raincoat factory, rising to general manager and then sole owner; by the 1930s he ran one of the city's large coat makers. His family continues the business at Cottenham House in Salford, a factory dating from 1853 beside the River Irwell, which the brand calls Manchester's last stand-alone clothing factory.
