Privacy

We collect very little, and we don't use cookies.

This page explains what we keep when you use Britdex, why, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Who we are

Britdex is an independent website run in the UK by Britdex. We decide how the information described here is used, which makes us the "controller" under UK data protection law. Why Britdex exists.

For anything about your data, email [email protected].

When you browse

You don't need an account, and Britdex doesn't set cookies or store anything in your browser to track you.

We count visits with Plausible Analytics, which doesn't use cookies and doesn't store your IP address or build a profile of you. It tells us things like which pages are read, what people search for on Britdex and which brand links get clicked, all as totals. Plausible stores this data in the EU.

Britdex is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks, and may keep short-lived logs for that purpose.

Some product photos load straight from the brand's own website, so your browser contacts that site and it sees the usual request details, such as your IP address.

When you send us something

If you use the "Something to add?" form on a brand page, suggest a maker, or tell us what you were looking for after a search, we keep what you send: your message, the option you picked, any maker name, website or "how do you know them" answer you give, the page you were on and your browser type (for example "Safari on iPhone"). We don't keep your IP address.

The "Something to add?" and "Suggest a maker" forms also ask for an email address, which is optional. We use it only to reply about what you sent, never for marketing, and we never share or sell it.

Submissions are stored in a Cloudflare database and emailed to us so we can read them. We use them to correct and improve the site. We delete them after 12 months, and delete an email address sooner if you ask.

Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: keeping the information on Britdex accurate and replying when you've asked us to.

When you leave Britdex

Links to brands carry a small tag in the address (for example utm_source=britdex) so the brand can see the visit came from Britdex. It doesn't identify you.

Once you're on a brand's site, or on Ko-fi if you choose to support us, their own privacy policy applies.

Your rights

You can ask to see what we hold about you, to correct it or to delete it, and you can object to how we use it. Email [email protected] and we'll reply within a month. Since we don't keep names or IP addresses, it helps to tell us roughly when you wrote and which page you were on.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk (opens in a new tab).
