Yard-O-Led

The Diplomat · The Perfecta · The Viceroy Standard

Made in BritainBirmingham, West Midlands
The Yard-O-Led workshop, from the brand's workshop page

Yard-O-Led traces the propelling pencil back to Sampson Mordan's patent of 1822, and the company itself to 1934. After the Second World War it set up new premises in Birmingham, and it has stayed in the city ever since. A small group of craftsmen assembles and decorates every writing instrument by hand, and some of them have been with the company for more than fifty years. Its silver pieces are hallmarked and individually numbered, and are described as still handmade in England.

Shown here are the Diplomat Barley and Perfecta Victorian propelling pencils, the hexagonal Diplomat Plain Ballpen, a design from 1934, and the Viceroy Standard Victorian Fountain Pen with its hand-applied pattern, all in sterling silver.

Had you heard of Yard-O-Led before today?

Only its silver writing instruments are covered. Yard-O-Led's notebooks, paper, ink and refills may be made elsewhere.

Where they're made

Birmingham, West Midlands

Made in Britain in Birmingham, where Yard-O-Led has been based since the Second World War. This covers its silver writing instruments, not its notebooks, paper or ink.

Made in Britain — how we know

In October 2026 we read Yard-O-Led's own site. Its product and collection pages say these pieces are handmade in England, the Perfecta page names silversmiths in Birmingham, and its Our Story page says the company is located there.
