Sub Zero

Machinists at industrial sewing machines in Sub Zero's sewing room, with a stack of black garments on a work table and cardboard boxes nearby

Sub Zero began with Derek Laxton's idea for technical thermal underwear, which came to him on a cold, wet climb of Helvellyn in the Lake District in 1967. He had a background in mechanical engineering and wanted to run his own company, and in 1969 Sub Zero Technology Ltd was created. Its thermal base layers started at the company's original textile mill in Leicester; heavier thermal mid layers followed, along with seamless knitting and body mapping. Still family owned, it is run by the third generation of Laxtons, based in Fleckney with its factory and offices in rural Leicestershire.
