In early 2015 designer Patrick Grant learned that Cookson & Clegg, a Blackburn clothing maker founded in 1860, was about to close with the loss of 60 jobs, so he bought it. When a later rescue he advised at a Scottish knitwear factory failed, the idea for Community Clothing took shape. Patrick started it with a Kickstarter backed by over 1,000 people; about five weeks later the first pieces were in production in UK factories. The aim is affordable clothing that keeps skilled jobs going in the UK's textile regions, with each product made by one partner factory, often in its quiet season. Its partner factories are mostly family-owned and mostly more than a century old.

The socks

Shown here: plain everyday cotton socks and cushioned sports calf socks, each sold in packs of three, plus a cushioned wool walking sock and a ribbed cotton sock dressy enough for formal wear. Most of the yarn comes from Germany, Italy, Portugal or Thailand.

Where they're made

the UK

Made in Britain by partner factories mostly in Lancashire, Yorkshire, the East Midlands, Scotland and South Wales. Its socks are knitted in Leicestershire, some finished in Yorkshire, or in West Sussex. Some yarn and cloth comes from abroad.

Made in Britain — how we know

Community Clothing's About page says every garment carrying its name is made in the UK, with one UK factory per product. Its materials page says some yarn and cloth comes from abroad, and each sock page names where it's knitted. Checked October 2026.
