Joseph Cheaney founded the company in Desborough, Northamptonshire, in 1886, and in 1896 it moved into the purpose-built factory it still occupies. It was sold to Church's in the 1960s and later came under Prada, until cousins Jonathan and William Church bought it in 2009. Uppers are still cut out and closed in Desborough, and Cheaney's own walk through the factory goes room by room: pattern, clicking, closing, lasting, making, finishing and the shoe room. The making room is where Goodyear-welted shoes get their soles, a construction that lets them be resoled later through Cheaney's refurbishment service.

The shoes

Shown here are the Hudson penny loafer, the Avon R derby brogue, the Otis trainer and, for women, the Maisie wingcap oxford brogue, all made in Cheaney's Northamptonshire factory. The Avon R is Goodyear welted onto a studded rubber sole, and the Otis has a rubber cupsole stitched through the sidewall.
