Carnwear

Jessye Boulton grew up near Penzance and studied fashion knitwear and knitted textile design at Winchester School of Art, graduating with a first in 2018. She returned to Penzance, and in 2021 her practice grew into Carnwear. Most pieces are knitted at the studio a few miles outside the town, on hand-powered machines that include a Swiss-made Dubied more than 80 years old, used by others in the trade before it arrived. Garments are shaped on the machine rather than cut from fabric. Finer-gauge pieces are knitted in St Ives, then finished at the studio. Colours and textures draw on the West Cornwall coast and moorland. Jessye also makes bespoke knitted costume pieces for film, TV and theatre.
The clothing
Shown here: a boxy roll neck jumper and vest in British wool, a triangle tuck stitch cardigan and a merino wool cap sleeve tee. Most Carnwear pieces are knitted at its studio near Penzance; finer-gauge pieces are knitted in St Ives, then finished at the studio.
