George Cox has been making creepers since 1949. Its first factory was Castle Works in Wellingborough, where it made shoes for more than 70 years. Adam Waterfield, whose father Norrie worked there, remembers visiting as a schoolboy and finding Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood in the office, talking over sequinned Beatle boots to sell beside the creepers they already stocked at their King's Road shop. Citing Paul Gorman, he notes McLaren was buying George Cox creepers in 1971, when the style was out of fashion, and that blue suede pairs were made on the original lasts. McLaren said his George Cox creepers were probably the most important things he ever bought.
